Thread starter jmcorey Start date Mar 15, Messages So I've read that the Norton is a great pup for a strat bridge, and there are some posts stating that the Air Norton is a good bridge pup also, though not necessarily for a strat, even though it is often used in the neck.
I read a post on another forum, though, that having an Air Norton in the bridge is like having two neck buckers in a guitar, both really smooth, and I took that to mean that there is not enough snarl from the Air Norton in the bridge with distortion. I would be looking for decent cleans but also BOTH singing leads and good crunchy power chords - a pickup that does sing but has no snarl is NOT what I want.
I'd like to hear your experience and thoughts, y'all. JaySwear Member. I absolutely loved the Air Norton I had in the bridge position of my old Warmoth strat. It was a lightweight chambered swamp ash body. That pickup was awesome! Very very smooth, as you've heard. With distortion it was really articulate. Can't remember now. Very smooth and clear on the clean channel, and very smooth and clear with distortion. Great pickup for the bridge. Actually I took that pickup and put it into the neck position of a Warmoth Telecaster Deluxe, but I loved it so much in the bridge position of my old strat that I think it may get moved to the Tele's bridge sometime soon.
I play mostly hard rock and metal, too. But I've always thought that a great sounding pickup on the clean channel translates well to a great sounding pickup with over drive. Not always true, but much more often than not it is I think.
The Air Norton is definitely a great sounding clean pickup. Never tried the Norton though, so I'm no help there. Messages 2, I found the air norton to be brutally bright in the bridge. Some people really like it in the neck, I find it too dark there, but not for lack of highs, more for extended low end. Messages 16, Strange, I loved how smooth and balanced is was in the bridge.
It has a tad more high mids that snarl and bark when I want it to. Used a regular Tone Zone for years but presently prefer the extra dynamics that the Air Zone provides. It will sing but isn't buttery smooth all the time which is not what I want. I can cut some mids by switching to parallel which is also a great sound. Currently has a seymour duncan pearly gates and it's just not working for me. I bought an Air Classic and put it in my american strat and i love that pickup in the neck but I want to try something different with this guitar. Open to suggestions but I'm considering buying either Dimarzio 36th Anniversary or Air Norton for the neck pickup.
Not interested in boutique brands and not interested in seymour duncan. Every seymour duncan pickup I've had, I've since sold over the years - I dont seem like like seymour duncan in general. The guitar this will go in is an ash body with a quilt top and maple neck. Has a floyd rose trem too. The bridge pickup currently in it right now is not very high output, I forget what model it is because it's been so long.
Looking for any advice! I'm getting an air norton instaled in my 7 string,I know it's not the same but i'll let you know how it sounds. I have a super-strat that had an Air Norton in the neck position. Alder body, rosewood fretboard, non-floating floyd.
I dug it for a long time, but then got the itch to try something new. I put an EVH Wolfgang neck pup in there and that neck position came alive. Sounds great split too. Highly recommended. I would try the 36th, I tried to like the AN, even bought it twice thinking it was the guitar being bassy on the first install and came to the same conclusion the second time For me the Paf joe is my neck pup of choice.
